I'd study the study guides and the quotes. Laz loves to hit at all points of a text especially the themes. So for that final essay, try to figure out a common theme or two that occur throughout all the texts that we read throughout the year and attempt to write a practice essay, cause like the midterm you won't have much time to think about it.
Ok There are alot of different Themes that we will most likely be responsible for regaurding Hamlet. Heres a list of Themes from the play.
Appearance vs. Reality -Things are not as they appear to be examples -Is the ghost real or is it a devil in disguise? -All of the characters lie, therefore they all appear to be what they are not. -Ophelia is told what to say to Hamlet, so her words may not be how she truly feels. -Gertrude lies to claudius -Claudius is a usurper, he is not the true king -A step futrhter is that when the play is acted, the characters are not real, they areb eing acted out bhy other people. Within Hamlet there is another play "the mouse trap" which is in the center of the story, drawing attention to it. The mouse trap also features actors which represent what they are not. - The question of Gertrudes loyalty is also relevant: Queen vs. Mother -"theres nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so." this quote by hamlet is also a part of this theme.
Honor / Revenge These themes are much more self explanitory, and go hand in hand. Hamlet has many examples of honor and dishonor. - When is blood vengeance Justified? -Laertes wanting vengeance for Ophelia and Polonius, is he justified? - Hamlet wanting revenge for his father - Claudius dishonoring the thrones and his brother. - Gertrude dishonoring Old Hamlet. -"It Is better to act like a king then be a king." -Hamlet
Religion -Life v. Death -to be or not to be soliloquy. -Heaven v Hell -Where will hamlet go if he avenges his father death? Laertes? Claudius? Gertrude? -Suicide -is it worth it? is justified? -fear of death -inevitability of death -insignificance of life
Gender roles this is an extention of appearence v reality -how men abuse women throughout the play -women not allowed to voice their opinion (although gertrude has more poewer since she is a queen) -treatment of ophelia
other themes are
Supernatural
Betrayal
if anyone wants elaboration on anything or has any questions or comments let me know
Other than the themes and quotes what other possible things do you think will be on the final? I am guessing just the general information questions that were on the study guides. If anyone can think of anything else please post it.
Can somone help me with yoricks skull. Is his an image of physcial decompostion? This image also comes up when polonius is killed. Am i right or am i going off track here?
For the Hamlet section, knowing the themes is excellent but also knowing all those questions on the review sheets would make sure you knew everything. If you know those sheets there's pretty much nothing Laz could ask that we wouldn't know.
Did anyone get this quote right on the Hamlet Act III test?
6. Why you look now, how unworthy a thing you make of me! You would play upon me; you would seem to know my stops; you would pluck out the heart of my mystery......?

This is when Hamlet tells either Rosencrantz or Guildensturn (I can't rememeber which) to play a pipe, and he replies that he doesnt know how. Hamlet explains that if you cant play a pipe then you cant play him. This is the quote where Hamlet burns bridges with R and G.
Did anyone get full credit on the Hamlet test for quote 5.
But, orderly to end where I begun, Our wills and fates do so contrary run That devices still are overthrown; Our thoughts are ours, their ends none of our own. So think thou wilt no second husband wed; But die thy thoughts when thy first lord is dead.
